The Optimo is the traveler’s Panama hat. While every other style in our collection needs a hat box or careful packing, the Optimo can be rolled, tucked into a suitcase, and it springs back into shape when you take it out. No hat box needed, no creasing, no damage — just your hat waiting for you at your destination.

This is not a compromise. The Optimo is a full authentic Montecristi Panama hat, handwoven in Ecuador by master artisans using traditional toquilla straw techniques. It earns its rollability through the open crown design — a distinctive central crease running front to back that serves as the rolling guide and gives the hat its clean, classic silhouette.

What Makes the Optimo Special

The open crown with its central crease is both the Optimo’s defining visual feature and its practical superpower. The crease runs from the front of the brim all the way to the back of the crown, creating a natural fold line that allows the hat to be safely rolled without stressing the weave. Unroll it, reshape it gently with your hands, and it looks as though it never left its hat stand.

How to Roll Your Optimo

1. Find the central crease running front to back along the crown
2. Gently fold the hat along the crease — the brim will curve naturally
3. Roll loosely from one side to the other
4. Secure with a soft cloth or the provided band
5. Pack on top of your luggage to avoid pressure
6. On arrival, unroll and reshape gently with your hands

Face Shape Guide

The Optimo’s clean, structured silhouette with its central crease suits most face shapes well. The balanced proportions work particularly well for oval and standard oval head shapes. The open crown also makes it one of the more comfortable styles for those who find structured crowns restrictive.

Grade & Brim Options

Available from Sub-Fino (everyday wear, from $130) up to Extra-Fino (heirloom quality, up to $760). For a travel hat, we recommend at least a Fino grade — the tighter weave holds its shape better through rolling and unpacking. Not sure which grade suits you? Visit our Grades Guide.

Brim widths from 2 inches up to 3.5 inches — a medium brim of 2.6 to 2.9 inches rolls most easily and is our most popular choice for the Optimo.
